Nick Holt Finally got out

My son called me from his hometown of Macon, Ga. on Monday and said that he would be in Columbus,Ga. (my hometown 1 1/2 hrs. away), on Tuesday to take me fishing. My heart was in my throat when he told me this. We drove up to my friend's lake and could only fish for 1/2 hour. (Didn't realize how weak I was). Ended up catching 3 nice gills in the 9" range before I had to pack it in. It was a gratifying and heartwarming experience believe me. Sure added color to my cheeks and more hope in my heart… Continue

thomas j swank Best bobbers

I'm sure you all know that the type of bobber or color of fly will greatly influence the number of fish you catch. I have outfished my buddy many times and occasionally he does the same to me. I first noticed this when the "Wing It" bobbers appeared on the market. I couldn't buy a gill. He was killing them with the "Wing It". The drag resistance on the "Wing It", is so much lower than most. It does seem to have some trouble in the wind. Sometimes If there is a nick on the line, it will not re

Jim Gronaw Elena Joy Gronaw Catches Her First Bluegill...In Her Dreams!

Well, I am sure that you all knew it was bound to happen....that's right, my grandaughter, Elena Joy, woke up from an unsettling dream yesterday and proclaimed she had caught the biggest bluegill of her young life.

'Wow! Granpappy', she told me,..'.it really was this big, really!" How big? 'This big!' she squealed...

thomas j swank There is a fish god

Went fishing yesterday for the first time in 10 days.Weather had dropped down to the 60's at night and high of 82. Perfect for the gills to move into the shallows. Little worried about the moon phase but it was 3% less than full. Gorgeous day! Started out with my flyrod for 45 minutes and caught a 3in. I was starting to get discouraged but I always have a backup plan;Worms! Ended up using the whole box. My goal for the trip was to catch 10 to fifteen for the skillet and to catch and release a

Andrew T. Mott Bassin' the reeds on "big pond"

Had a fun day today spending about five hours passing along an important tradition with my three little ones. Had been years since I "spun" the reeds for bass and pike on my favorite lake, but decided to take the kids on a spur of the moment. This is just a handful of what we caught and not in ideal conditions as we had wind gusts of 20 mph.! Not only was I surprised by the fact that the bassin' has gotten much better and the number of pike has decreased, but the quality of the fish was incredib… Continue

Michael Burchfield My first filleting project

Today my mom, my little sister, and I went fishing. We rented a boat for a half an hour on a small lake in a slightly larger community in Ohio. It was a metal rowboat, and it had been sitting in the sun for hours, and we all know what metal feels like after it's spent hours in the sun. We glided along, casting towards shore with bright red bobbers and high hopes (We used worms so we were pretty sure we would catch some fish. I see my mom's bobber go under. "Jerk up!" She jerks up with the rod an… Continue

Howdy Y’all

Another evening and night trip to Norfork 1700 we started working the opposite bank of one of the back coves. Working both gill lines and cat rigs we set up to work this new side.

The wife was separate from me and as she walked back to her poles due to bobber problems that cased a chang

Howdy again Y’all

Well of we go to try our luck at evening and night fishing at Lake Norfork.

Really breezy gusts up to 15 mph and straight into the back of the cove we were working, yes we worked and sweated to wait the wind out. We had a few peckerfish but mostly it was dead.

2lbgill Some interesting reading

Here are a couple links to some interesting Big Bluegill studies. I think in the coming years that many DNR's will will be changing their thinking on the management of Bluegills and hopefully bring it's status up even with Bass and Walleye fishing.

Nick Holt Better than the media

I've only been with BBG.com for close to a year now, and realize that it beats any fishing shows or articles I have read. Not only is it informative, but who can beat a site that has quality videos and pictures? I'm still recovering from my bout with pancreatitis, and the doc says I won't be active or back to work until the end of September. (Doesn't mean that my sweet wife can't drive me to the lake for a little cast and recreation.) The heat here has broken some and the evening hours look good… Continue
