Quest, With a little help from my Friends

This quest began with Tommy Winton, of Florida. He was posting pictures of MASS QUANTITIES of Blue Gill and Red Ears. The picture that got the ball rolling was his picture titled "86 Gill and Shells". Reading thru the comment found out he had caught them on crickets fished in 12" of water on bottom. One of Tommy's quotes is " If they not hitting CRICKET they are not going to touch anything!"

I am a flyrodder so live bait is not an option and began working on a sinking cricket pattern.

The background is Sooner Lake, a cooling lake for an electical power plant which is abou 40 miles from my house. You can go to this site which has 2 cameras pointed at the nest. The eagles bring fish to the young. Some are large it is a lot of f

Full Moon Fishing

For those of you with fly rods, try fishing on a full moon at the areas you find the gills on nest.
Went last night in kick boat armed with size 8 3X long seal bugger (leach pattern). As soon as the clouds left and the moon lit up the lake, gills and black perch and bass like dark patterned flies. Full moon is on the 7 th. this month. So you have tonight and tommorow. Fished til 1 am.
17 blue gill later and one nice crappie.
Oklahoma can get warm so night fishing is a great option.

Lone Elk Park Lake is a catch and release only lake run by the St. Louis County Department of Parks and Recreation located in Southwest St. Louis County. Only artificials can be used. They allow only 2 boats per day on it and you have to reserve it far in advance ($30 per day). Fishing is from 8am to 6pm. I only get to fish it a couple of times per year because it fills up quickly. It is loaded with big hybrids, bluegill and longears, as well as crappie, small bass, catfish and MONSTER carp.

I used to fish Hudson quite a bit growing up but never really caught much of any size out of there. I know it is full of smaller crappie. Do you know if it happens to have Red Ear in it? A friend of mine said he caught a Walleye out of it but I really do not think it has any in there.

I fished Osage for the first time about a week or so ago and all I caught was a small Coppernose and small Longear. Not what I expected from that lake. Have you caught some nice ones from there?

They are a very different fish I'll say that. The best I have figured so far is that they like the bottom and live bait, not to say that they wont strike an artificial, it takes some real skill though from what I can gather and I really admire those…

I am still trying to figure out how to fish for Redear. I have not had much luck with them. The seem to be pretty smart. Do you have tricks you would like to share on catching these guys? Did you happen to get the weight of any of these fish?

They fight just like a big bluegill. I am told you can eat them but haven't tried yet. The ones we caught today went to a friend who has a pet shop. I wouldn't mind trying them though. They are local to south Texas and I would imagine that they eat…

Oops sorry Zach I forgot about need a trout stamp on your license.

Bank access has improved since they began stocking trout back in the late 90's. As of now State regs require a trout license to fish it during the season ($10). If you plan to launch a boat you will need a permit. Not sure about other options as far…

About the only time you can fish Pawhuska from the bank is when they drop the lake for trout season. There is no cost to fish it.

I know, I will have to try it out this fall when the temps drop a bit. Can you fish it from the bank at all, and is there a cost to fish it?
