I have a cheap Humming Bird and a X-125 Lowrance and I don't like either of them. The Humming Bird (up front) always wants to switch to simulator mode automatically just when you need it and is not consistant. The Lowrance X-125 (rear) worked for th…

Don't hens have feathers and fly?

We call big male Bluegills bulls so shouldn't we call the big females cows ?. I myself don't see where a hen (female bird) fits into a water oriented world. Just me but it doesn't sound right, I know Trout fishermen call female trout "hens" but that doesn't sound right either and we aren't trout fishermen. Can't us Gillers come up with something original that sounds right? Bulls and hens don't sound right together except in a farm yard.

Reprimended

I got scolded today for throwing back a fish. We were fishing back in cove for gills and were catching a few small 3-5 " gills and throwing them back when out of the clear blue we hear this voice very loudly from a fella on shore carrying a bucket and long stick complaining that we had no respect for the property owners because we threw back the little ones. I thought I would just pass this bit of levity on to everybody. The only problem was this guy was serious. By the shape of him I think that… Continue

Perfect Spring Day

It was one of those lazy days today when I couldn't get anything done and I kept looking thru the birches at that lazy bit of back bay in the lake that is about a 100 yards away and a 3 minute walk from the yard and a doz. little jobs to do. It also didn't take me too long to grab my old fly rod and tie on a black rubber spider that lay hidden among some other hooks saying take me, take me. I'm available. I haven't had that rod in my hand to attack some gills for about 5 years now since the rota… Continue

M Caldwell, Yes, I'm fishing from shore most of the time. I look at the current and usually cast my jigs into the seams, just in the edge of where the main current and boils meet. Below some dams, it doesn't matter where you cast. Just try to keep m…
